When JK Rowling gets together with tweeting supremo Stephen Fry, the results are always going to be popular. So this year's Light a Birthday Candle website enlisted the internet might of UKFast to ensure that record numbers of visitors were able to reach the website, learn more and make their donations.
Lumos, the charitable organisation co-founded by JK Rowling, launched the campaign today - International Children's Day - 1st June. The Light a Birthday Candle campaign asks people worldwide to host their own birthday party to support the project, along with lighting a virtual candle for the children.
"Over a million children and young people live in large residential institutions across Central and Eastern Europe. Separated from their families and isolated from their community, they receive little human or emotional contact," writes Lumos on their website. "While some of these children will never know their actual date of birth, many institutions choose 1 June, International Children's Day, as the day when all children have their 'birthday', further eroding their sense of individuality.
The campaign has garnered much celebrity backing with chefs such as Simon Rimmer, Ainsley Harriot and Phil Vickery donating tea party recipes.
With such high profile support, Lumos, along with their website developer Bug Interactive, have created a website able to cope with a potential influx of visitors. Enlisting the help of award winning hosting provider, UKFast, they're making sure the website responds to all visitors, no matter the volume.
Lawrence Jones, MD of UKFast, said "As soon as we were approached by Bug Interactive to work on this initiative, I knew we had to do everything possible to support this fantastic charity. For many in the Western World, it is inconceivable that a child might not have a birthday party, let alone know when their birthday is. This campaign is so simple yet can make a real difference to the lives of children. We are delighted to be able to help Lumos with their Light a Birthday Candle campaign."
UKFast placed its Webceleration technology in front of the hosting solution. The Webcelerator prevents the website from becoming overloaded. "This technology is perfect for sites expecting traffic spikes. Even during the busiest periods, no one should see an error page," comments Neil Lathwood, IT Director at UKFast.
As well as giving the charity the hardware and software needed to support their website, UKFast got into the spirit by hosting a bake sale of their own on June 1st with all proceeds going to the Light A Birthday Candle Campaign.
