Rugby sevens side Ponty Butchers has secured its short-term financial future, thanks to the backing of Welsh businessman Lawrence Jones MBE, CEO of internet hosting firm UKFast.
Jones, a known philanthropist and passionate rugby fan, is contributing sponsorship to support the club through the upcoming season.
Ponty Butchers, based in Pontardawe, Swansea, is run by volunteers and made up of local Welsh-based players from across the Welsh Premiership, Welsh Championship and local club leagues. The Ponty Butchers men’s and ladies’ side will both wear the UKFast logo on their match kit and leisure wear throughout the forthcoming season.
Founded by award-winning butcher Clinton Roberts in 2009, the team has included notable players such as Dan Biggar, Tommy Bowe, Ian Gough and Garin Jenkins.
Jones said: “I am looking forward to supporting our new venture into rugby sevens. It may only be a small investment but if just a few youngsters are inspired then the impact on the community is incalculable.
“The persistence and dedication of the Ponty Butchers is inspiring to me and a great lesson that we can transfer into our business. I wish the whole team the best of luck in the upcoming season.”
Jones’ firm is also the main shirt sponsor of Aviva Premiership side Sale Sharks.
The Butchers will compete in a number of tournaments this summer including the Kinsale Sevens, Chester Sevens, SW7s Exeter defending our title and Beach Rugby Wales in Swansea.
Gareth Howells, commercial manager of the Ponty Butchers, said: “We are delighted to have secured the support of both Lawrence and UKFast as our official sponsors, which allows us to focus on our rugby and on picking up silverware this season.
“Sevens is a fast, exciting game that is developing all the time and we are assembling an exciting squad for the coming season. We hope Lawrence and the team at UKFast have an enjoyable season with us. We are lucky enough to have a number of pro players support us which will help to spread the UKFast’s brand across our social media.”
