New community sites unite regional groups

Article date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 10:49 GMT

<b>airport<b> bringing together a communityLawrence Jones, Managing Director of UKFast believes that more and more communities are building better websites that lead to valuable unisons. He cites as an example, a new independent website designed to offer services and facilities to the 20,000 staff who work at Manchester Airport. With so many companies based at or working for the north's largest airport, employees represent a very disparate community. Entrepreneurs Robin Walling and Fran Spriggs are looking to bring them all together online. The community website will be the first of its kind in the UK and represents a shift from hardcopy staff newspapers to the Internet. Robin believes that the web's advantage over its more traditional counterpart is interactivity. “We are not affiliated to the Manchester Airport Group but are providing a resource for a community that does not have an interactive focal point. Once logged in, members can influence the content of the site – there's a tangible investment for them.” The website uses the latest dynamic technologies and divides the services into five themes. Travel news, a buy or rent local property search, jobs across the airport, items for sale by staff and special ‘insider' discount offers.” The site is a welcome addition to the UKFast Network. Lawrence Jones sees the shift online for communities as inevitable. “With over 15million connections to the Internet across the UK, it's no surprise that regional community websites are currently experiencing a massive growth. And with the latest technology they don't need to look less professional than their corporate counterparts. is the proof.”
