Update Prevents Hackers From Overwriting Memory
Microsoft's Mac Business Unit rolled out a pair of security- and stability-enhancing updates for Office 2008 and Office 2004 on Tuesday.
The Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.6 update contains improvements to stability and compatibility. It also fixes vulnerabilities than would allow attackers to overwrite your Mac's memory with malicious code. This 333MB update applies to users of Office 2008, Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, Office 2008 Special Media Edition, Word 2008, Excel 2008, PowerPoint 2008, Entourage 2008, and Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition
In addition, Microsoft released a Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition update Tuesday that promises calendaring improvements and the ability to sync notes, tasks, and categories with Exchange Server. In addition, the update also enables logging that can be used for diagnostic purposes.
Similar to Tuesday's Office 2008 update, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.6.0 improves security and also fixes a vulnerability that can result in malicious code being run on your Mac. This 192MB update applies to users of Office 2004 Standard Edition, Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition, Office 2004 Professional Edition, Word 2004, Excel 2004, PowerPoint 2004, Entourage 2004.
Tuesday also saw the release of Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.1.6, the utility that lets users of earlier versions of Office open files created in Office 2008 or Office 2007 for Windows. Microsoft's release notes provided few details about the 45MB update.
