Microsoft Corp and MediaTek have jointly announced the companies will work together to offer a multimedia rich smartphone device based on Microsoft Windows Mobile platform aimed at the emerging Chinese smartphone market.
Mediatek is a Taiwan-based semiconductor company that specialises in wireless communication and digital multimedia solutions.
The partnership between the two companies will aim to offer cost-effective smartphones in the ever growing Chinese smartphone market and will also look to fend of the advances of US based Marvell Technologies, which has its eyes set on the Chinese market.
According to the joint press statement released by the companies, the smartphones, which will be based on Windows Mobile 6, will have full touch capabilities and offer advanced communication features including email and Internet access.
Commenting on the new partnership with MediaTek, a Microsoft representative said in a statement that "There is a huge thirst for smartphones in emerging markets. For many people, the phone rather than the PC is the main entry point to the Internet, resulting in a high demand for rich communication devices."
Interestingly, a MediaTek representative also confirmed that the company will be making a similar deal with Google regarding its Android OS in the second half of this year
