Online advertisers are likely to welcome the latest figures from the Advertising Association, which indicate that strong gains made in 2007.
According to new data from the body, the internet advertising sector grew by some 40 per cent during the year, resulting in its identification as the fastest growing medium.
While online advertising grew as a means of delivering messages to the market, direct mail and the press contracted.
Also, while internet marketing grew by nearly two-fifths to account for 15 per cent of the market, its nearest competitor - cinema - grew by only one-tenth.
An earlier report published by the Advertising Association suggested that the market had the potential to grow by almost 40 per cent in the next 12 years.
Internet Advertising was predicted to be the driving force behind such gains, increasing its market share to 12 per cent in 2019 from 3.9 per cent in 2006.
