New tool could bring widget makers more internet

New measurement tool could bring widget makers more internet advertising revenue Software developers could be in line for more Internet Advertising revenues thanks to a new measurement tool from comScore.

It has been apparent for some time that social sites such as Facebook and Google's Orkut are achieving remarkable user traffic, but makers of the "widgets" that have helped achieve the growth have not seen much online advertising revenue, Business Week reports.

Partly this is because there is a lack of reliable data about how many people are using them, but comScore is to use a new yardstick that could give advertisers a better idea of how many visitors they get.

The new method includes activity on Facebook, which is one of the most popular social networks. It can track how many people click on a certain widget, because it can account for those widgets built using the JavaScript programming language, as well as Flash-based ones.

The company's Linda Abraham says it will give people more of an idea about who is using what widget.

"Widgets are looked on as not yet proven," she said. "We talk to widget companies all the time, and it comes up in every conversation."
