Just 14 per cent of companies consider search marketing when building their website, according to a recent survey by a search engine marketing agency.
Matt Paines, head of search specialist XSEO, said it was essential that companies prioritised search-engine optimisation, adding that without this foundation a website would be "rendered invisible" on search engines such as Yahoo and Google.
"It's a shame that so many companies waste huge amounts of money," Paines said. He argued that what they should invest in is "simple planning and consideration about how they will be found on the Internet", which he sees as "the real measure of (a company's) success or failure online".
