Solicitor Hilary in fight to stop the MoD spies

A CHESHIRE lawyer is fighting MoD moves to 'spy' on wounded soldiers. Hilary Meredith, senior partner at Hilary Meredith Solicitors in Wilmslow, has written to MPs demanding an end to secret surveillance of soldiers seeking compensation for injuries suffered on active duty. The Ministry of Defence recently sent a standard letter to every combat claimant, warning that they could be secretly filmed by MoD police if there is a suspicion of fraud. But Hilary, who has worked for members of the armed forces for 21 years and is currently representing 200 clients, said: "This is a national disgrace and must be stopped with immediate effect. "We are talking about British soldiers who risked their lives and suffered horrendous injuries around the world. Is this how they deserve to be treated when they get home?" She said far from putting in fraudulent claims, soldiers were often reluctant to seek compensation - despite the often horrific nature of their injuries. "They are the most reluctant litigants you can imagine. We act for people with amputations, burns, shrapnel wounds, paralysis. Some will need care for the rest of their lives and many have psychological problems which would not show up on any covert spying video." Hilary added that funding on surveillance would be better spent either on health care or better equipment so fewer soldiers get injured. "This is taxpayers' money that is being used to spy on young people who have been injured carrying out orders. I am sure the British public would much rather it was spent on better equipment for our troops or improved rehabilitation."
