Hitwise list demonstrates power of Internet marketing

Market intelligence company Hitwise has compiled a list of the most popular online brands as part of its 2006 UK online performance awards. Highlighting the most successful UK websites in 50 different industries, the Hitwise survey used the online usage and search behaviour of more than 8.43 million Internet users in the UK, and found that eBay was the most searched-for brand. The auction website was followed by Bebo, Argos, Amazon, easyJet, the BBC, Auto Trader, Tesco, eBay UK and CBBC. A high number of online retailers in the list suggests the wide-reaching effects of Internet marketing, as more traffic is driven to sites like Argos, Amazon and Tesco. The latter recently declared its intention to expand its online presence by making thousands more products available on the web. Tesco also reported its best Christmas sales period ever last year, buoyed by phenomenal Internet sales of £150 million. www.directtraffic.org
