Guardian has the largest online audience - Nielsen

The Guardian remains the most popular UK newspaper website, according to the latest stats from Nielsen//NetRatings. The newspaper has now held the top spot for the last 12 months.

The Telegraph has taken over second spot from The Sun, while The Times, and the Daily Mirror are fourth and fifth respectively. In addition, all of the top ten newspapers in the list have managed to increase their online audiences so far this year.

Highlights from the report:

* The Guardian is the top online newspaper, with almost 2.7m online readers, followed by the Telegraph with 2.07m and The Sun with 2.04m.

* 7.4m people visited at least one of the top ten newspaper sites, equivalent to 23% of UK web users. Overall, the online newspaper audience has grown, from 5.6m in December 2006. US newspaper websites have experienced similar growth this year.

* The Daily Mail has experienced the most impressive growth in 2007, with its online audience increasing by 117% from 700,000 to 1.4m unique visitors in August.

* The Telegraph, which improved its online offering this year, introducing blogs for its readers, has been rewarded with strong growth. It has more than doubled its audience from 1m to nearly 2.1m in August.

The Financial Times managed to grow its online audience by 51%, from 201,000 to 303,000 unique visitors this year. It will be interesting to see how the recent changes to its subscription model will affect these figures.
