The new communications-focused .tel top level domain is now open to the public.
Previously, the domains where available to pre-book .tel domain names on a first come, first served basis to be ready for today (March 24, 2009) when prices drop substantially.
Tens of thousands of .tel domain names have already been registered in the trademark owners reserved period and premium priced period and are in the process of being populated by their owners with information.
On March 24th, anyone will be able to purchase a .tel domain, depending on the range of services available from your .tel service provider.
Phil Kingsland, director of communications at .uk registry Nominet, said: "The open registration period for .tel is upon us, any individual or business may register their .tel domain, and the next few months will begin to show how successful .tel is likely to be. With overall growth in levels of domain name registrations slowing it will be interesting to see how businesses react to this new top level domain (TLD).
"Companies should still be mindful of the opportunities and potential risks to an organisations' brand as new domains are launched. Organisations should do as much as they can to stop on-line brand infringement by implementing effective domain name strategies to maintain the welfare of their brand identity."
