Online Child Protection Expert Earns OBE

Online Child Protection Expert Earns OBE

The Queen's 2010 Birthday Honours list has recognised internet safety expert John Carr for his services to online child protection.

Carr, secretary of the UK Children's Charities' Coalition on Internet and a campaigner for improved child safety on the web, said being awarded an OBE is a "great honour". He said he wants the award to be seen as an acknowledgment of everything Britain's children's charities have been doing for many years to help make the internet a safer environment.

Carr told Computer Weekly, "Protecting children on the internet is seen as a mainstream public policy issue now. The internet is a lot safer and secure but we've got some way to go.

"One current issue of great concern is the use of mobile phone and GPS applications and how they are going to impact users in relation to privacy and personal security as well as potentially putting children and young people at risk."

Carr is a senior expert advisor to the United Nations and sits on the executive board of the government's Council for Child Internet Safety. Previously a member of Microsoft's Advisory Board and an adviser to the likes of Google, Yahoo and Vodafone, he first lent his professional advice to the UK's largest children's charities, Action for Children, in 1996.
