Yahoo confirmed that its Web site was down temporarily yesterday, but has not released details.
In a statement which was released ysterday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the search engine said, "for a brief period Yahoo.com was inaccessible to some users." She continued, "we have identified the issue and are working to correct it immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might have been affected."
The spokeswoman said she could not say how widespread the outage was, how long it lasted or what caused it.
Web surfers on Twitter started reporting problems accessing Yahoo.com and related sites around 2:30 p.m. PDT. As of 3 p.m., some users commented that they were able to access Yahoo. However soem internet reports state that the site was down for an hour.
The outage comes amid rumors that AOL and possibly other firms are considering making offers to buy Yahoo. The rumors prompted a 6 per cent rise in Yahoo's stock today.
