VMware Rolls Out Zimbra Collaboration Tools
VMware has posted an updated version of its Zimbra collaboration platform.
The company said that the Zimbra 7 release would offer users improved collaboration and sharing features, as well as options for management on both the administrator and end-user level.
VMware said that the update will include some 230 added features, including redesigns to the calendar, scheduling and inbox tools.
The Zimbra Briefcase feature will seek to help users better collaborate on documents by allowing users to share and store files as well as the ability to 'check in' and 'check out' documents.
Administrators will also find new controls in the Zimbra 7 release. VMware said that the update will give administrators the ability to create and manage distribution list restrictions. By setting parameters on access to distribution lists, the company believes that spam loads can dramatically be reduced.
The update also marks a change in Zimbra's distribution strategy. VMware said that in order to keep up with a growing variety of devices and platforms, it would be changing the way it offers the Zimbra Desktop, Collaboration Server and Collaboration Applleiance.
"Going forward, we are committed to releasing future offerings of VMware Zimbra concurrently as a single platform," the company said in a blog posting.
"We believe that this commitment to a single platform provides huge benefits to both VMware Zimbra end-users and administrators."
Release of the update comes roughly one year after VMware purchased the Zimbra service from Yahoo. The company said that it sees Zimbra's collaboration platform as a complement to its virtualisation and cloud-based IT platforms.
