Toshiba Unveil 3DTV Without Glasses

Toshiba Unveil 3DTV Without Glasses

Toshiba has unveiled the GL1 3D LCD TV range, displays that do not require users to wear glasses to view 3D images.

The GL1 series will initially consist of 12in and 20in models and could help boost adoption of 3D technology.

Both screens come with a 500:1 contrast ratio. The larger screen boasts 829 million pixels, approximately four times the number a Full HD panel contains, according to Toshiba.

To create the 3D effect, the GL1 screens take image data from each pixel and replicate it nine times. A lenticular sheet then controls the direction of these pixels to help create a smooth, natural 3D image that can be viewed from multiple angles without glasses, the firm said.

Traditionally, 3D images are generated using active shutter glasses that deliver separate images to the left and right eyes.

Toshiba also stated that the 20in GL1 will come with energy-saving features, including automatic stand-by and the ability to maintain optimum image brightness to help reduce power consumption.

The Glasses-less 3D REGZA GL1 range will be launched in Japan this December with pricing yet to be confirmed. If successful, it no doubt won't be too long before Toshiba starts shipping them around the world.
