STA Travel to bolster email list with competition

STA Travel is hoping to increase its email subscriber list to 500,000 with a new viral campaign offering a £20,000 holiday as the prize. The Ultimate Trip campaign centres on a quiz where people can find out what kind of traveller they are, ranging from a Nerdy Norma to a Risque Ricardo, based on questions such as "What's your idea of giving something back when you travel?" The prize is a £20,000 holiday for the winner and three friends, taking in eight countries including the US, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand, including flights, accommodation and spending money. STA Travel is hoping that the campaign will raise the database of people signed up to the weekly email newsletter from 350,000 to 500,000. The campaign is being promoted on the STA newsletter, as well as on sites including the Lycos viral chart, the MTV competition page, the community website funky.co.uk, as well as on stickers. An internal promotion among STA staff will offer a night out on the town for four to the person who distributes the competition to the most number of friends. Basil Hyman, internet director of STA Travel, said: "This is the biggest travel prize we've ever heard of, let alone given away, so we're hoping it will be a massive motivator in getting people to spread the campaign virally."
