Murdoch and Jobs Collaborate to Create iPad Newspaper

Steve Jobs and media mogul Rupert Murdoch have teamed up to create a new digital newspaper designed exclusively for tablet computers called the Daily.

The venture will be launched on the iPad early next year and is expected to be rolled out on other tablet-style devices. The US-focused Daily will cost 99 cents (62p) a week.

Murdoch views the iPad as a "game changer" and has seen projections that there will be 40 million iPads in circulation by the end of 2011, a source told The Guardian: "He envisions a world in which every family has an iPad in the home and it becomes the device from which they get their news and information. If only 5 per cent of those 40 million subscribe to the Daily, that's already two million customers," the Guardian said.

The announcement follows dwindling online traffic figures at News International's sites The Times and Sunday Times. According to audience research company Nielson, traffic at the sites has dropped by 43 per cent, with the number viewing stories having declined by 88 per cent since the titles went behind a paywall earlier this year.
