According to research, many parents are unaware of the dangers their children are in, when using smartphones.
The research was commissioned as part of Safer Internet Day and found that over 20% of parents do not monitor what their children are doing online.
Tony Neate, Chief executive of Get Safe Online, said: "Unfortunately, none of us - of whatever age - is immune from encountering problems online.
"Without using controls such as built-in security, safety and privacy features and search engine filters, children will almost certainly run into something that really isn't appropriate for their age, or any age."
The study found that while 50% of parents said they had set up parental controls on their children's laptop, a worrying 40% said they had not done so on their smartphones.
