Ofcom has released an online tool to allow people to see what kind of mobile coverage they should be getting.
The map is based on data provided by mobile operators as well as Ofcom's own testing of signal strengths around the UK.
The map-based system can be searched via postcode, or alternatively, visitors to the page can zoom in on location. It also provides information about geographic features such as valleys or hills which may mean signal strengths are lower than expected.
The watchdog said it was seeking feedback to fine tune the map to make it more accurate.
Ofcom's chief technology officer, Steve Unger, said: "Access to reliable mobile phone coverage used to be a 'nice to have'."
Ofcom said the coverage might be affected if phones are used in busy areas, as congestion might limit data rates to an individual handset.
Ofcom also said if people are getting a very different service to what can be seen on the map they should provide feedback so the data can be updated.
