Nokia N8 has Mass Power Problems

A number of Nokia N8 users have reported a power fault on the new smartphone, which causes handsets to switch themselves off.

The N8 started shipping at the end of September and is built on operating system (OS) Symbian 3. Nokia admitted some of its N8 devices had an issue relating to power management.

Niklas Savander, head of Nokia sales and marketing, said in a video statement that a limited number of customers were experiencing power problems due to the way the Nokia engine had been assembled. He admitted this was a significant issue for individuals effected and action had been taken to prevent the same problem occurring on other handsets in the product range.

Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, said the power fault was a concern for Nokia after delays to the shipping date earlier this year. "Nokia are in a delicate situation at the high end [of the market]. It's critical that they avoid problems," she said.

Cozza said she expected the glitch to have little impact on overall sales and for the handset to continue to prove popular.

"As product quality is a top priority for Nokia, we have taken immediate actions to address this. As with any product performance issue, this is covered by Nokia's warranty," said Nokia in a statement.

Nokia's marketshare recently decreased by 1.7 per cent despite maintaining first place among the top five brands.
