Complaints from programmers have led to Microsoft providing them with early access to Windows 8.1.
It marks a back-track from the firm, which originally announced that developers would receive the new release at the same time as the general public - which would have been a departure from previous practice.
Programmers have now been given access to 8.1 in order for them to begin developing and testing before the release, which is due to take place on October 18.
One of the most noticeable changes in the 8.1 version is the start button being more obvious.
