UK IT staff are in the money

IT managers in the UK are among the best-paid in the world, making £62,180 a year on average to put them in fourth place in the global pay charts behind Switzerland, Denmark and Belgium.

The figures come from a new survey by consultancy firm Mercer, which analysed the total annual cash compensation and remuneration information for IT staff in 6,545 firms across 35 countries.

Chart-topping Switzerland led the way, with IT managers there paid £74,150 annually. For the same role in second-placed Denmark the figure was £64,750, while Belgium paid an average of £63,760.

North American pay rates were slightly lower than most of their European counterparts, with US IT managers pulling in £56,550 a year on average, while their Canadian cousins weighed in with £49,370.

The survey found that six of the world's 10 highest-paying countries for IT managers are in Western Europe.

At the other end of the scale, the survey found that IT managers in Vietnam, Bulgaria and the Philippines received the lowest pay, respectively, at £8,140, £11,700 and £11,720 a year. Indian IT managers were fourth from the bottom, earning an average of £13,150.

David Van De Voort, IT workforce specialist in Mercer's Chicago office, said the figures in part reflected the impact of outsourcing and off-shoring on IT roles in North America and Western Europe.

"Lower-level roles are being moved to regions where talent is cheaper; the jobs that remain in Western Europe and the US may be fewer in number but are more demanding and complex roles, like vendor relationship manager, internal consultant and IT business partner."
