House Of Commons Plays Down Porn Figures

House Of Commons Plays Down Porn Figures

Almost 300,000 attempts to access websites classed as pornography were made from computers within parliament in the past year.

The figure, which emerged following a freedom of information request, was released by IT chiefs at the Palace of Westminster.

It relates to the devices linked to the parliamentary network, including those used by MPs, peers, their staff and other employees.

Officials responded by saying the figure was increased by auto-refresh, pop-ups and other functions and did not represent deliberate efforts to access pornography.

A House of Commons spokeswoman said: "We do not consider the data to provide an accurate representation of the number of purposeful requests made by network users due to the variety of ways in which websites can be designed to act, react and interact and due to the potential operation of third party software.

"Visits to blocked adult sites may nevertheless be recorded in this dataset depending on website design."
