A hacker has threatened to reveal the personal details of customers at a Swiss bank unless it paid 10,000 euros.
The Banque Cantonale de Genève (BCGE) said a "further attempted coercion" had been thwarted along with an attempted cyber attack.
The bank said it had put in place "additional measures" for any clients potentially affected, after the hacker threatened to release the details of over 30,000 customers. It warned its customers to take extra care when using the internet to bank.
The bank said: "In line with an expected pattern of events, the bank duly observed that certain information has indeed been intercepted and published."
Banks are said to be regularly attacked by cyber criminals, but many attacks are left unreported.
