Google Unveils One Pass Service in UK

Google has launched publisher payments platform, Google One Pass.

The service is essentially a streamlined payment system which allows publishers to set prices and terms for access to digital content.

Google takes 10 per cent off the publisher as a cut, and this move comes just as Apple has unveiled its new payment system for those selling subscriptions to online publications. Going via iTunes, publishers will have to fork out 30 per cent with Apple, which will sting considerably more.

One Pass offers a process whereby a reader only has to subscribe once, and then can access content across multiple devices, from computers through tablets and smartphones, with just a single sign on.

Lee Shirani, Director of Business Product Management, Google Commerce, explains on the Google blog: " With Google One Pass, publishers can customize how and when they charge for content while experimenting with different models to see what works best for them - offering subscriptions, metered access, 'freemium' content or even single articles for sale from their websites or mobile apps."

" The service also lets publishers give existing print subscribers free (or discounted) access to digital content. We take care of the rest, including payments technology handled via Google Checkout."

The One Pass scheme is now available in the UK and US, along with Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
