Another firm has joined the tablet market in the form of Disgo with its forthcoming Tablet 6000.
The announcement of the Disgo device follows news of the 1 November launch of Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet and the unveiling of Research In Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook.
The Tablet 6000 has a 7in high-resolution TFT touch-screen, 256MB DDR2 memory and 2GB storage, an SD Card slot, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and a range of ports, including two USBs. The device runs on the Android 2.1 operating system.
Although no price has been announced, it is likely to be competitive, particularly as the market is still maturing, and has a very dominant leader in the form of the iPad.
According to industry watcher DisplaySearch, shipments of netbooks and tablet PCs fell by four per cent during the last quarter compared with the previous three months. However, shipments still managed to be up by 29 per cent against last year's numbers, thanks largely to strong sales of the Apple iPad.
In total, 3.3 million iPads shipped during the quarter.
However, Apple does not have the market sewn up, according to John F Jacobs, director of notebook market research at the DisplaySearch.
He said new entrants to the market may attract consumer and business users through lower prices and their choice of operating system.
"The majority of tablets have, or will, choose a combination of next generation Intel Atom CPUs or ARM-based CPUs paired with a version of Android, or in the case of HP, webOS," he said.
"Although Apple now holds the vast majority of tablet PC market share, the plethora of other brands that have, or will soon be launching, their own tablets are sure to capitalise on what at this point appears to be widespread consumer demand for very thin and very light devices with exceptional battery life and a primary focus on portability and content consumption."
