George Osborne took to Twitter for the first time today, to mark his latest Budget.
The Chancellor's fist tweet read: "Today I'll present a Budget that tackles the economy's problems head on, helping those who want to work hard and get on."
Mr Osborne's home page shows a picture of him working at his desk, with the famous red Budget box in front of him.
Within hours his account - run by the Chancellor and the @conservatives team - had more than 16,000 followers.
He follows 39 people, including Prime Minister David Cameron - who boasts over a quarter-of-a-million followers.
While Mr Osborne did receive some messages of support after his arrival on the social media site, a number of replies displayed underneath his message were of an abusive nature.
