BBC Three will now distribute its content online after broadcasting its last show on TV.
The content from BBC Three will be available on YouTube, BBC iPlayer and social media channels such as Facebook and Snapchat.
The target audience of BBC Three is 16-24 year olds and the BBC Trust claimed the new online format would greatly appeal to the younger generation.
The broadcaster announced the move to a digital-only platform back in 2014 and it was originally intended to launch in Autumn 2015.
The move is said to be part of the digital transformation plan the broadcaster is undertaking in order to cut costs.
Tony Hall, BBC Director General, said the BBC Three strategy will save the firm £30m.
In September last year Hall also suggested BBC Three should transform into an "open platform" for nurturing UK talent and making content easier to consume.
