Apple has bought the social media data analytics firm, Topsy.
Topsy specialises in recording Twitter data to track customer sentiment and is one of the very few firms to have access to Twitter's entire data stream.
The analytics firm recently created a searchable database of all tweets, a number that has topped 400billion since Twitter's launch.
Although Apple is the one of the world's biggest firms in the technology sector, it is not known for its involvement in social media.
The company's earlier efforts to launch their own social networking system - Ping, the music sharing service - failed to catch on with consumers.
Apple has decided not to provide details on its purchase of Topsy, simply commenting: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose."
