Network Solutions, one of the largest domain registrars and hosting providers, is experiencing Domain Name System service problems that is causing problems, not only for its hosted sites, but for sites accross the Internet that rely on its DNS services.
Canadian news site, SooNews.ca, identified Network Solutions as the cause of a critical DNS error, resulting in a number of sites to flicker off-and-on since early Thursday. DNS, being what ties a domain name to a specific server, is crucial to the Internet. Affected sites are getting a "server not found" error message.
A recorded message on Network Solutions' support line told customers that the engineering team is investigating the problem, and in the mean time, customers should retry accessing their email or websites because they may come back online after multiple attempts.
This situation points about the importance of redundant DNS hosting. Earlier in January, the WHIR reported about hosting provider Server Intellect (www.serverintellect.com) offering geographically-redundant DNS hosting at no extra charge to all customers, providing greater uptime, faster DNS response times and increased reliability.
