O2 broadband service goes live
The much delayed broadband service from mobile operator O2, which is powered by Be Unlimited's unbundled ADSL2+ technology, has finally gone live today. Those signing up before 31st January 2008 will benefit from a 100 day money back guarantee.
The service details and pricing are as previously announced and have been re-stated again below. Note that the first price is for those that already have an existing O2 mobile phone contract, while the second is for people that just want the broadband by itself:
* Standard (up to 8Mbps)
Existing mobile contract price: £7.50 per month
Standalone price: £17.50
* Premium (up to 16Mbps)
Existing mobile contract price: £10
Standalone price: £20
* Ultimate (up to 20Mbps)
Existing mobile contract price: £15
Standalone price: £25
In addition O2 are offering freecall UK based customer support, a wireless router, McAfee (anti-virus, spyware, SPAM, firewall and parental controls) security suit, 10 e-mail addresses (1GB of storage for the main account and 200MB for all the others), O2 Email to Mobile and the chance to send up to 100 free texts on the web each month.
Past the 100 day trial period customers will be subjected to a 12 month contract. In addition each package is based off an "unlimited" Fair Usage Policy (FUP), which is somewhat vague. There's also a £50 early cancellation fee for those wishing to leave once inside of the contract period.
We've learnt that Be Unlimited's customer may be able to swap onto O2's packages sometime in the near future, though this is not presently possible.
