IBM expects the global market for cloud computing services to be worth $126bn by 2012 and is bolstering its capability to strengthen its own offering.
The IT giant this week acquired Cast Iron Systems to give it the technology and experience to connect internal systems to clouds without the need for coding work, and connect internal clouds with external clouds.
The cloud computing services global market was worth $48m in 2008 according to IBM.
Craig Hayman, general manager, IBM WebSphere, said, "The combination of IBM and Cast Iron Systems will make it easy for clients to integrate business applications, no matter where those applications reside. This will give clients greater agility and as a result, better business outcomes," he said.
IT departments must take responsibility for providing users with seemless cloud services while retaining security and quality.
* Cast Iron helped pharmaceutical distributor Amerisource Bergen Specialty Group connect Salesforce CRM with its on-premise corporate data warehouse. The company has been able to give its customer service associates access to the accurate, real-time information they need and it saved $250,000.
* Cast Iron worked with a division of Allianz to integrate Salesforce CRM with its on-premise underwriting applications to provide real-time visibility into contract renewals for sales teams and sales management. Allianz replaced labour intensive custom code with Cast Iron' integration solution and beat its 30 day project integration deadline.
