Equinix houses Meebo platform

Data centre operator Equinix announced on Wednesday that live communications platform provider Meebo has moved its operations to one of Equinix's Internet Business Exchange centres in the Silicon Valley.

Meebo is now able to enhance the delivery of its services globally by operating within a fully redundant, high-performance data centre that offers direct access to a large aggregation of networks that link to their users.

Launched in September 2005, the free communications platform provides instant messaging and group chat to over 35 million people via its website and various partner sites.

It enables users to consolidate the various contact lists from different popular messaging platforms, including AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, and Jabber, to communicate with on a singly IM platform.

With an average user spending over two hours on the site per day, as well as processing over five billion messages per month, Meebo needed a data centre environment that offered a secure and redundant physical platform for IT operations.

The company turned to Equinix's data centre environment, which includes a high-performance backup system that provides uninterrupted power even in the event of utility power disruption.

The centre is also designed to accommodate the cooling and power needs of the latest generation of High Power Density equipment. Last month its Silicon Valley Internet Business Exchange centres received certification from the Bay Area Green Business Program.

Equinix says it also provides Meebo with a network-rich environment with direct access to the more than 250 Internet-based customers, enabling Meebo to provide a high-performance multi-network connectivity infrastructure.

By directly interconnecting with the group of companies in a single location, rather than connecting to them in multiple, disparate locations and over long distances, Meebo will improve its performance levels by reducing bottlenecks in the path between its services and its end-users.

"Meebo's platform is another example of an innovative solution that harnesses live interactive technology to enhance communications," says Margie Backaus, chief business officer of Equinix.

"At Equinix, Meebo can operate within a high-reliability environment that ensures the most streamlined delivery of these services to end-users."

Equinix provides network-neutral data centre and interconnection services, offering colocation, traffic exchange and outsourced IT infrastructure solutions.
