Dell ups ante in data centre market share grab
Dell has expanded its line-up of servers, to include a new product aimed at businesses doing a lot of work on the Internet. The server debuts as top technology providers are more focused on supplying hardware and software for corporate data centres, which are a critical piece of infrastructure usually stocked with hundreds if not thousands of servers. Despite the recession, it is estimated that businesses will spend US$100 billion this year on data centre software and hardware, according to market tracker IDC.
Products like the recently introduced Dell's XS11-VX8 are also important to the Round Rock, Texas-based firm. It ranks third in world-wide server revenue behind IBM and Hewlett-Packard, according to IDC.
