Web Host Evicted, Clients Sent Scrambling
Ann Arbor, Michigan, web hosting provider IAS.net (www.ias.net) has been evicted this week, leaving a number of nonprofit organization and business websites out in the cold, according to a report from the Ann Arbor Business Review.
The web host lost its office space due to "chronic late-payment of rent," an agent with the real estate company with which IAS was leasing the office told the Ann Arbor Business Review. IAS's website lists dozens of local clients, including the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority, Eastern Michigan University Foundation, Zingerman's and Michigan Radio.
The outage left local businesses scrambling for web hosting, which other hosting providers including HDL and Online Technologies rushed to provide services to the list of affected clients. Part goodwill and part opportunism, both offered several weeks of free hosting to affected clients.
IAS is one of many recent cautionary tales warning clients about the risks of dealing with untrustworthy web hosts. WHIR editor Liam Eagle offered some tips for smaller web hosts to avoiding being mistaken for a company like IAS in a blog entry last week.
