Technology is being positioned at the forefront of local government efforts to meet cost-saving targets, according to a survey of councillors.
Around 84 per cent of councillors say they are open to new ways of using technology, while 72 per cent expect their council to rely more on technology to deliver services, according to a survey from Intellect and ComRes.
Charles Ward, COO of industry body Intellect, said it was encouraging to see councillors aware of the potential of technology to solve problems. "Technology is a powerful tool that can be used to help local authorities achieve cost savings while improving the way services are delivered," he said.
"Plenty of councillors, regard the cuts as an opportunity to redefine the way services are delivered," said Andrew Hawkins, chairman of political research company ComRes. "However there is also an undercurrent of fear that local government will emerge from the financial crisis less focused on long-term strategic priorities such as climate change, and more under the yoke of central government," he added.
Of the 432 councillors surveyed, around 95 per cent expect their council to cut staff numbers as a result of the cuts and 56 per cent said the green agenda will take a back seat as the spending cuts bite
