An innovation prize has been awarded to Fiat's eco:Drive software - a computer tool that helps motorists drive with greater fuel efficiency and lower cost.
The system won the Digital Technology prize at the Media Guardian Innovation Awards.
Using the software, drivers plug a USB stick into the car dashboard and it records details of their driving habits. They then uploaded data onto a personal computer, where software analyses the driver's performance and provides suggestions for techniques that will lower fuel consumption.
Measures such as these could improve fuel efficiency whilst reducing the amount of vehicle carbon emissions from the car.
