ICT 'equivalent to aviation for UK carbon emissions'
ICT equipment is the cause of three to four per cent of the world's carbon emissions, it has emerged.
Small businesses that use such equipment have been advised by one specialist to keep energy consumption down by taking a series of measures.
Penney Poyzer, author and broadcaster on environmental issues, has pointed out that simple measures such as changing settings on printers could make a big difference.
"It's very simple stuff; get to know your printer, have equipment that will enable you to print both sides," she said.
"It's not only about wasting paper - it takes an enormous amount of energy to produce a printed sheet."
Ms Poyzer commented that the three to four per cent of world emissions produced by ICT translates as ten per cent of the UK's energy bill in total and therefore has the same impact as aviation.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) consider green issues to be of high importance. According to statistics from Environwise, 79 per cent of SMEs regard energy efficiency as important.
