A "very clear mandate" has been sent out by the government, which will help the UK to meet its carbon reduction target, a business group has said.
John Barwise, chairman of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, explained that the government's low carbon strategy - which was published last week - had made its green policies understandable.
He added that energy efficiency and other low carbon changes would not only help the environment, they would also be useful for businesses and the economy.
"Businesses and consumers can reduce greenhouse gases. Now that we have a very clear policy line and a direction to move to we can work from that basis," said Mr Barwise.
"Previously, there was a lot of prevarication about what direction the climate change initiative should develop. Now we've got a very clear direction which everyone can work from."
Among other proposals to reduce carbon emissions, the government said that it planned to generate a third of all electricity in the UK through renewable sources by 2020.
