Will Day has been appointed as the new chair of the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC).
The former chief executive of Care International, Mr Day will begin his new role from July 27th.
He takes over from Jonathan Porritt as the head of the independent organisation, which advises the UK government on sustainability and environmental issues.
On his appointment, Mr Day said that he would be starting his new role at a time of "growing public and political understanding of the immense social and environmental pressures that are building up around the world and that affect us all".
"These realities will require thoughtful and decisive action by government at all levels, business and our wider society," he added.
"I am greatly looking forward to working with my fellow Commissioners and the SDC team ? to make sure that the SDC's role as an independent champion for a sustainable future is as prominent and effective as our responsibilities as a watchdog."
Mr Day has also previously served as the chairman of the BBC Children in Need charity.
