What to expect from DDoS attacks in 2018

16 February 2018 by Jenn Granger

Your site is up and running – brilliant! The products are flying off your metaphorical shelves and the revenue is coming in, but suddenly things take a turn for the worse.

Why has your site just crashed?

Tech BreachDDoS attacks are a great way of taking your competitors offline fast and ferociously. These common online sieges fire traffic at your website, ravage your bandwidth and make your site crash and burn.

26% of DDoS attacks are driven by rivalry. If you’re an online fashion retailer, other companies might be selling similar products and want to scupper your sales. To do this they launch, or pay someone else to launch, a distributed-denial-of-service (or DDoS) attack to eliminate a rival.

A DDoS attack basically floods your site with traffic all at once, overloading your website and steamrolling your network capacity. While your site is down, you lose out on revenue. It could take days or weeks for your business to recover from this shock, in which time you have missed out on vital sales, peak traffic times and your stock is yesterday’s news.

Ukrposhtam – the Ukrainian postal service – was the victim of two DDoS attacks in 2017, and suffered severe consequences. However, they were certainly not the only ones to have been targeted, with 84% of businesses worldwide being subject to a DDoS onslaught throughout last year. Long-lasting effects include:

  • Reputational damage
  • Financial loss
  • Downtime
  • Fines of up to 4% of your company’s annual turnover (under the new GDPR regulations)

While the business world is now much savvier when it comes to the DDoS landscape, it looks like these attacks will continue their upward trend with RDoS, or ransom DDoS, occurrences becoming more and more commonplace. While the purpose of DDoS attacks is to clog up your bandwidth and reduce your sales, RDoS attacks are motivated by money, with criminal hackers holding your business to ransom.

Invest & plan

Investing in DDoS mitigation infrastructure is your first line of defence. The programme sits in front of your firewall to identify an attack before it reaches your server, analysing the traffic that your server receives to discover any abnormal, falsified requests.

DDoSx® detects, rejects and absorbs DDoS attacks. Our UKFast security specialists analyse behaviour to predict attack patterns using algorithms to ensure we defeat the latest and most sophisticated attacks.

DDoSx® investigates all attacks and generates a unique fingerprint for each attack, identifying and redirecting this traffic away from your webserver, keeping your business online and functional.
Get protected

Maintain your software

If your software is telling you it needs an update, stop pressing ‘remind me later’! Updates are extremely important for making sure you have the latest version of your security features. Lapses and lack of maintenance to your software can be prime targets to hackers and DDoS specialists.

Add an extra layer to your security by applying a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to monitor potential threats. Being proactive and pre-empting dangers this way significantly lessens the risk of attack.

Your employees must all understand the nature of DDoS attacks and their potentially devastating impact on your business. Ask your hosting provider for training programme suggestions on how to keep your employees’ up-to-date.
