What is it like joining UKFast? Plagued by first day nerves or full of forgotten names and trying to find your way. Lowri, the latest addition to the UKFast Comms team, shares her experience of joining the UKFast team so that future new recruits stepping into her shoes needn’t wonder what to expect.
The energy at UKFast is impossible to ignore. Walking into the building, you can feel the buzz and drive from everyone in the company and immediately you feel welcome.
My first day began with the standard first day nerves (of course) but were soon followed by a wave of excitement; entirely down to the positive, sociable energy bouncing off every member of staff.
The team at UKFast are like no other team I have ever encountered in a working environment; they really strive to create a fun work ethic within the office and the company itself has clearly taken the effort to invest in the people, all of whom are involved in the success and drive of UKFast.
The office is unlike any other bog-standard workplace. The walls itself are bright and vibrant, portraying the positive, vivacious attributes of every employee.
The building work that is ongoing around the office is also absolutely incredible and cannot go unmentioned. With plans to build slides, a crèche, a gym, kennels and auditorium (to name just a few aspects of UKFast Campus), there really is no stopping this company.
Everything is drafted and built to enhance the experiences of both the staff and the customers at UKFast.
My first day was a Friday, which is also “dress down” day at the office. Fridays at UKFast also entail something called “Beer Friday” which was something I haven’t come across before in any of my previous jobs… not complaining though, at all. At around 4pm, the Beer Trolley comes around the office with a beer for everyone – an opportunity to celebrate an excellent week.
Aside from the insanely fun activities that Friday entails, I also had to work. And I couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
The communications team were very welcoming and within minutes of being there I felt part of the group. We had a team meeting in the morning, which enabled every member to discuss the targets for the week, as well as setting themselves individual challenges. It was great to be part of the meeting, to really get an insight into the team and how they work as a group.
Earlier in the day I had attended a short induction with the Training Team – two former school teachers, who’ve created UKFast’s own curriculum, apprenticeship and graduate schemes, and are ensuring that every member of staff has their own development path.
The induction included an ice breaker, short presentation and a video to introduce myself and other new recruits to the UKFast team.
It was so much fun to learn about how UKFast has grown over the years to become such an ambitious and fast growing company. Throughout the induction, I could easily see how the positive energy that runs through the core of UKFast is radiated throughout the entire office, creating a fun, welcoming work environment.
I was really eager to get stuck into work, and as soon as my email was set up in the morning I was raring to go, writing news stories and blog pieces for the website. I really enjoyed delving straight into the workload and loved learning from the others. Everyone is extremely helpful and welcoming, assisting me with any queries or questions I had about both the work and the company. No question is a silly question.
It’s clear after my first week that if you want to work for a company that injects fun into work, whilst creating exceptionally rewarding results, this is the place.
Last year the in-house film team produced this ‘First Day ar UKFast’ video and it pretty much sums up the vibe! This was shot in the old City Tower office though, so the next version is sure to include the unbelievable parts of UKFast Campus as well.
