On August 2nd 2010, Microsoft released MS10-046 – a windows update released outside of the normal update schedule.
This update addresses vulnerabilities in handling of shortcuts (.lnk’s) in the Windows Shell. Microsoft are now seeing active exploits and hence have released this update 1 week prior to the usual ‘patch tuesday’ updates – which are released on the second Tuesday of every month.
This update applies to Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2008 R2. A more detailed list of affected OS’s and information on the update and how it affects you can be found on Microsoft Technet.
Initial spot checks of the server OS’s above show that once KB2286198 is applied, a reboot is necessary.
(as usual, as a UKFast customer, you benefit from these updates being applied automatically unless you have opted out of this service.)
