Complementing further studies by McAfee and Symantec, our feature story names and shames the top spam relaying countries and commends China for its efforts in dropping down the list.

The spam relaying 'dirty dozen'
While it is no surprise that the US has been identified as the main offender in the list of the Top 12 spam relaying countries of 2010, China has caused a stir by dropping out of the 'dirty dozen' altogether.
In a report covering the first quarter of the year, anti-virus company Sophos has identified that spam originating from hacked computers in China now contributes to just 1.9 per cent of the world's spam. Despite its reputation as a hub for cyber crime, China has reported a steady decline in the last 12 months in the proportion of spam relayed by computers in the country, placing them in fifteenth.
Despite figures showing that the US has also reported a decrease of 6.7 per cent since April 2007, the US still contributes to 13.7 per cent of the world's spam. Along with India (7.3 per cent), Brazil (6.8 per cent) and South Korea (4.8 per cent), this new 'gang of four' account for over 30 per cent of all global spam.
