Nielsen's Top 100 Websites

As part of their Superpower series of programmes exploring the power of the internet, the BBC has created an interactive treemap to show the Top 100 websites in terms of monthly traffic.

As measured by Nielsen from the unique users from January 2010, the findings reveal that just five UK businesses have made the Top 100 with only the BBC achieving a place in the top half at number 30. Despite entries from Brazil, Germany and France, the US dominates the list with 88 per cent of all entrants.

Unsurprisingly, Google tops the list overall, followed by fellow search engines MSN and Yahoo! and software giant Microsoft, with social networking site Facebook completing the top five.

With AOL also earning a place in the top ten, search engines own the greatest market share with 22.77 per cent, with media (10.79 per cent) and retail (9.88 per cent) narrowly keeping social networking at bay with 7.53 per cent.

Here is the complete top ten:

  1.    Google
  2.    MSN/WindowsLive/Bing
  3.    Yahoo!
  4.    Microsoft
  5.    Facebook
  6.    YouTube
  7.    Wikipedia
  8.    AOL
  9.    eBay
  10.  Apple

Confirming Google's online dominance, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have also topped Forbes' latest web rich list with individual incomes of $17.5billion. Chief executive Eric Schmidt also joins them in the top four with $6.3billion, behind founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has also returned to the list after dropping out in 2009 during the economic downturn.

Despite entries from Japan, China, Canada and Germany, the US again dominates the list with 15 of the 26 richest internet entrepreneurs, denying the UK a single place.
