Apple stays on top as Microsoft falls
Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs has been named as the most powerful person in media by The Guardian, demonstrating that the brand has remained relatively unscathed by the recent controversy.
Despite the iPhone 4's antenna problems, the Apple co-founder climbed from fourth to first place to take the top spot in the MediaGuardian 100 ranking of the top figures in media, media business, advertising and public relations.
One of the biggest fallers in the list however was Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer, who has fallen from five to 29 as the software giant struggles to compete with Apple and Google with emerging media technologies.
While Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were hot on Jobs' tail in second place on the MediaGuardian 100 list, they failed to secure the top spot for a consecutive year over privacy concerns and their problems in China.
Also making the top five was Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. The chief executive of the tweeting phenomenon climbed four spaces from ninth spot as the service continued to grow as a communication and social networking tool. Also bringing up the rear, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg rounded out the list of technology figureheads at number 10.
Despite suffering weeks of bad publicity, Jobs' latest victory concludes a record quarter for the brand. In addition to selling 3.47million Macs (a 33 per cent increase on the same period last year), 8.4 million iPhones (again a 61 per cent increase on last year), the company sold more than 3 million iPads in its first three months of entering the market.
