• Master-Slave - in this case one server is the master to which you can write all data. • Master-Master - this system uses two master servers to which you can write to either server at any given time, so both servers are actively replicating your data. If one server fails there is another with the exact same data ready to take over. So you get automatic failover and zero downtime. For complete redundancy masters can be physically separated on the network.
