UKFast Adds Record CEPH Object Storage to eCloud Range
Article date: Thu, 08 May 2014 12:04:10 GMT
Hosting and colocation firm UKFast has launched the second phase of its eCloud solution with one of the largest CEPH-based object storage solutions in Europe to add to its fast-growing cloud range.
The eCloud range, originally launched last July, generated more than £1m contracted revenue within two months of launch. This next stage of the cloud range adds six SGI® Modular InfiniteStorage™ units, adding 1.4PB of available space to the existing storage options - which currently include high-end storage from HP's 3Par - to open the cloud up to more big data projects and storage of large sets of data like Dropbox or Facebook. The hosting firm plans to add up to 8PB of SGI storage to its portfolio over the coming years.
Lawrence Jones, UKFast CEO, said: "From the beginning the eCloud has been focussed on meeting our clients' demands, whatever they may be. This is why we developed our own orchestrator level, rather than using an off-the-shelf package, it allows us to create completely bespoke solutions quickly.
"This isn't our first move into open source - we have one of the largest Linux teams in the country - but for eCloud we've not released any of our open source projects to the public. Now, with the ever-increasing need for on-demand facilities and a distinct lack of British hosting providers offering them, it makes perfect sense to add this to our portfolio.
"Whilst this isn't something that we expect to make huge sums of money from, we are anticipating 1 million users to sign up."
Last year the fast-growing firm moved into its new £5m home on the edge of Manchester's Technology Park and committed more than £4m into training and development, including the launch of an apprenticeship scheme, graduate programme and dedicated training facility.
The SGI Modular InfiniteStorage platform is an integrated server and storage system designed to provide extreme flexibility with industry-leading density in an innovative, adaptable design. Doug Rainbolt, general manager of Storage at SGI, the leader in high performance computing and Big Data, said: "SGI is extremely excited to be working with UKFast in helping to deliver the next phase of their eCloud service to the UK market. This is a great opportunity for UK consumers to use cloud services, and demonstrates how SGI Petascale storage solutions can be integrated by customers to provide innovative offerings to their own customer base.
"The SGI Modular InfiniteStorage platform is perfect for environments such as CEPH, as its dense and powerful package enables customers to pool processing and storage requirements tightly together for greater efficiency. This allows innovative organisations such as UKFast to provide a powerful, high performance yet low cost platform that can meet the requirements of today, and is adaptable to meet changing needs over time."
