The founder and CEO of Manchester hosting company UKFast has been named the North of England's top technology entrepreneur at the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards.
Lawrence Jones, who founded UKFast with wife Gail 12 years ago, was commended for his role in growing the Manchester firm from a two-man office in 1999 to the £20 million turnover company it is today.
Jones said: "I entered these awards in 2008 but with hindsight I realise UKFast had not had the time to prove itself; whereas this year, UKFast has been growing consistently for more than a decade and is in a very strong position for the future. I am, however, under no illusions that I could achieve accolades like this without a great team of people beside me, so this is an award for all of UKFast, not just me.
"When I collected the award, Fred Done [Betfred founder and winner in the overall North of England Entrepreneur category] asked me how pleased I was to win. I told him 'If I am stood on a stage, collecting an award with you, I know I must be doing something right'. It is fantastic to be recognised alongside these outstanding business people and this is a great acknowledgement of how far the company has come this year."
Jones recently made the "sideways and upwards" move to chief executive of the growing technology firm, appointing former communications director Jonathan Bowers as managing director. Jones's move has allowed him to focus on the strategic direction of the business and the development of the company's new data centre facilities as well as the overall expansion of the UKFast Group.
Of the 55 finalists from the Northern region, 12 were crowned winners at last night's ceremony at the Lowry Hotel in Salford, in categories including retail, manufacturing and social enterprise.
Jones, and the other finalists will go on to represent the region in the UK finals in October. Winners from the UK finals will go on to compete for the global awards in Monaco next year.
